Pope Julius II

Legacy

Pope Julius II's legacy follows us still today because of his commission to Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel(pictured at the left).  One of the greatest artistic feets was done at his order and is still admired today by people all over the world.

Julius, who commissioned 4 amazingly painted rooms from Raphael (now known as Stanze di Raffaello, in the Vatican).  And, it was Julius who hired Bramante to construct an impressive new basilica in place of old St. Peter's.

Julius himself laid the cornerstone, but he never lived to see St. Peter's Basilica finished.  The tomb of Pope Julius II is now in the church where he Giuliano della Rovere, himself, first became cardinal.

Julius is referred to as one of the most remarkable occupants of the papal chair.  Not only did he makes contributions in art he also was known for his political and warlike achievements.  He was the leader of Venice during both the War of the Holy League and the Italian Wars.
