Pope Julius II

Biography of Pope Julius II

Early Life

Pope Julius II was born on December 5, 1443 in Albisola, Italy.  Originally, his name was Giuliano della Rovere and when he was still very young, he found his calling.  During his early 20's, Giuliano worked as the altar boy for Pope Sixtus IV.  Soon afer, his uncle, Francesco della Rovere, sent him to study with the Franciscans and later to a convent.  Here, it is believed, that Giuliano first realized that he wanted to venture toward the papal chair.

Becoming the Pope

After many uncivil meetings with his rival, Pope Alexander VI, Giuliano was very angry when he did not cecede the rule as pope.  Nonetheless, Pope Alexander VI fell ill and died just 11 years after he began his term.  At this point Giuiliano had a mere glimpse of hope that his time was coming.  But, this idea was cut short when Pope Pius III was consecrated instead.  Finally,  after the sudden death of Pope Pius III just 10 days later, Giuliano was voted in as Pope and upheld the name Pope Julius II.

Reign and Late Life

Although Pope Julius II had a very humble position, he was not regarded as humble in the world of politics.  Having, many believe, bribed his way to the papal chair, Pope Julius II started the Swiss Guard.  these men were to protect him, which he regarded as useful since he was so unliked.  Then, on February 21, 1513, at the age of 60, Pope Julius II died and is now resting in St. Peter's Church.
